SME retailers expecting sales boost over Easter weekend, study finds

New research carried out by Royal Mail suggests that a quarter (25 per cent) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Britain’s retail sector are anticipating strong sales over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

The study, which quizzed small retailers from all across the country, found that a large number were anticipating a busy four days ahead – with more than half (58 per cent) planning on keeping their doors open for at least one day during the holiday.

In addition, 18 per cent of SME retailers said that they were planning on working all four days of the bank holiday weekend.

Meanwhile, 69 per cent of respondents told the survey that they had gone out of their way to maximise their stock and streamline their shipping networks ahead of time, to ensure they were prepared for the anticipated rise in consumer spending both on the high street and online.

In particular, retailers are anticipating strong demand for DIY items, electronics and alcohol products, the study found.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson on behalf of Royal Mail, said: “Although predominantly a time for celebration and family gatherings, Easter bank holiday weekend is now a key moment in the evolving e-commerce calendar.

“It’s encouraging to see that SMEs are fully geared up for the opportunities the upcoming long weekend presents,” he said.
